Make An Alligator Ribbon Sculpture

Use green grosgrain ribbon to create an alligator sculpture.

Hair ribbons used to be simple bows tied with a single strand of ribbon. With a bit of creativity, these simple bows have grown into more complex hair accessories. Ribbon sculptures, for example, use grosgrain ribbon to create flowers and animals. For example, with two pieces of a green grosgrain ribbon worked into military braid, you can create an alligator ribbon sculpture for your hair or any number of decorative uses.

Instructions

1. Cut two 24-inch lengths of 1/4-inch green grosgrain ribbon. Pass one of the cut ends of both ribbons through an open flame, such as a lighter or a candle to heat-seal the ribbon. Pull the ribbon out of the flame once it melts.

2. Make a 1/4-inch loop with one of the ribbons. Hot glue the loop to secure it. Apply hot glue to the heat-sealed end of the second ribbon. Place it on top of the first ribbon at a 90-degree angle, positioning at the base of the loop for the first ribbon. Let the hot glue set for three to five minutes.

3. Make a 1-inch loop with the second ribbon. Feed the end of the loop through the loop of the first ribbon. Position the loop so 1/4-inch sticks out of the first loop and the loose end of the ribbon hangs out the other side. Make a 1-inch loop with the first ribbon. Feed the end of the loop through the second ribbon's loop. Continue to create loops and feed them through the prior loop to create four pairs of loops for the alligator's head.

4. Make four more pairs using larger loops to create the body of the alligator. Make each loop 2 inches each, leaving 1 inch exposed before passing the next loop through, creating a looser braid.

5. Finish the tail by adding five more pairs of loops with the 1-inch loop size. Finish the tail by pulling the tail through the loop instead of leaving it out the other side. Apply hot glue to the ends of the two ribbons where they touch the loops. Trim the ends of the ribbons and heat-seal them.

6. Cut four 2-inch lengths of 1/4-inch green grosgrain ribbon. Fold the ribbon in the center at a 45-degree angle to create a V-shape. Apply hot glue at the fold to secure them.

7. Fold one end of each V-shaped ribbon in half lengthwise. Cut from the outer edge of the fold to the centerfold, making a 1/4-inch cut to create the feet. Apply hot glue to the uncut ends of the four ribbons. Glue them to the underside of the braided green alligator body, positioning two legs behind the head and two legs in front of the tail, with the feet facing forward.

8. Wrap two 1/2-inch lengths of 1/4-inch green grosgrain ribbon into two circles. Apply hot glue to the ends where they overlap. Apply hot glue to the inner edge of each circle and insert a goggly eye into each one. Apply hot glue to the bottom of each circle and press it to the top of the alligator's head.
