Finish plain socks with an edge of ruffled tulle.
Lace, ruffles, ribbons and tulle are all important materials for dressing a little princess. After pulling together an outfit of a dress and hair bows, don't forget her pretty feet -- every princess needs stylish shoes with frilly socks peeking out over the tops. Of course, you could purchase boutique socks, but you can also make tulle ruffle socks for a fraction of the price of ready-made items. You may even have the materials you need to make ruffle socks on hand.
Instructions
1. Measure around the top edge of the socks with the tape measure and double this measurement. Cut two rectangles from the tulle. The rectangle length should be the doubled sock measurement. Make the rectangle widths the width you desire for the sock ruffles -- 1 to 2 inches.
2. Set the sewing machine to a long basting stitch and place a tulle rectangle into the sewing machine to stitch along one long edge. Stitch about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the tulle along the long edge. Repeat the same process with the second tulle rectangle.
3. Pull the threads to gather the tulle ruffle. Gather the threads until the ruffle is the same as the sock measurement (undoubled). Repeat the same process with the second tulle ruffle.
4. Pin the gathered edge of the tulle ruffles to the top inside edges of the socks matching the raw edges of the ruffles and the top edges of the socks precisely. This will place the ruffle at the correct edge after you cuff the socks.
5. Stitch around the pinned edges of the socks to sew the tulle ruffles to the socks. Place the stitch line right over the stitching like you sewed when you gathered the tulle. Remove the pins after stitching.
6. Cut two pieces of ribbon, each piece 1/2 inch longer than the sock measurement.
7. Pin a ribbon piece over the stitching along the top of each sock. Make the ribbon cover the stitching on the tulle ruffle. Turn under each raw end of the ribbon 1/4 inch to conceal the ribbon ends.
8. Sew along the top edges of the socks again to stitch the ribbons in place. Remove the pins.
