Riku is one of the characters from the Kingdom Hearts video games. In the games, he has silvery-gray hair that is around shoulder length and layered in chunks. When making a wig for a Riku costume, whether for cosplay or for Halloween, the process is simple.
Instructions
1. Obtain a wig that is either silvery-gray or a very pale lavender. Ideally, the wig is about shoulder length, though longer than shoulder length is appropriate as well.
2. Place the wig on a wig head and pin it firmly into place. This will prevent the wig from moving during cutting and styling.
3. Look at a reference picture, and comb the wig so there are bangs forward and the hair on the sides and back is even. Riku's hair does not part on either side.
4. Wet the wig and use a blow drier and comb to straighten the hair, if necessary. While, ideally, a wig is straight when it comes in, if the wig is wavy rather than straight, it needs to straighten out before it is cut and styled.
5. Cut bangs if the wig does not have bangs. Riku's bangs cover the eyes and stop just below the eye level with the bangs straight across. Start a little lower and then trim it down to size, as necessary.
6. Pin up the top layers of hair, and start from the bottom layer. If the wig is shoulder length, the bottom layer in the back needs only a little styling gel, or hairspray and styling in the Riku chunks. If the hair is longer, trim the hair to about shoulder length on the bottom layer in the back. Trim the bottom layer of the sides at an upward angle from the back to make the sides slightly shorter than the back. Style the sides in similar chunks to those of the back, and use the holding product.
7. Unpin the next layer and separate again for another layer. Keep the next layer from mingling with the finished section by keeping pins between the layers or working in small areas from the back to the front. Trim the next layer slightly shorter than the first by pulling the hair away. The back layer is straight and the sides gradually layer upward by pulling the hair out, tilting the fingers and cutting at an angle with the shortest side closest to the face. This will create a layered appearance to the hair. Style the hair in chunks and use holding product. Repeat the process until all the hair is trimmed.
8. Adjust any layers as necessary. The shortest layers at the front for Riku's wig should end up slightly shorter than chin length on the top and about chin length at the bottom. The hair should move backward to shoulder length in the back. The chunky hairstyle should blend on the top layer and differentiate around the face and bottom most layers. Check the reference picture to adjust the styling.
