Buying ribbon from a craft store is much less expensive than buying hair bows.
If you want to spend a fortune, go into a children's clothing boutique and buy hair bows to match all of your daughter's outfits. If you want to save money and give your daughter one-of-a-kind accessories, learn make your own hair ribbons for little girls, instead. With a few simple steps, you can convert a basic hair accessory into a stylish, original creation. Once you master the basic process, experiment with new styles and add-ons to make even more creative hair ribbons.
Instructions
1. Measure the length of the alligator clip that you will decorate with ribbon.
2. Cut a piece of grosgrain ribbon that is as wide as the alligator clip and three times as long, as measured from the pinched end to the open end.
3. Seal the ends of the ribbon by painting them with clear nail polish. Let the nail polish dry completely.
4. Apply a line of glue along the entire underside of the top portion of the alligator clip. Hold the clip open with your fingers to avoid gluing it shut.
5. Line up one sealed end of the ribbon with the innermost corner of the top of the alligator clip, where you have placed the glue. Press the ribbon along the strip of glue to line the inside top of the alligator clip with the ribbon. Release the pinch on the clip to close the alligator clip; the extra length of ribbon will hang out of the mouth of the clip.
6. Apply a line of glue to the top of the hair clip, then fold the ribbon up and over the opening end of the alligator clip to line the top of it. Smooth the ribbon in place with a finger to secure it. Now the entire top portion of the clip is lined in ribbon, inside and out, and the excess ribbon is hanging down over the pincher end, at the top of the clip.
7. Place a dot of glue on the top and bottom of each half of the pincher mechanism, then wrap the ribbon around the pincher and pinch each half with your fingers to secure the ribbon.
8. Place a line of glue on the underside of the bottom half of the alligator clip, covering only 1/3 of the length, moving from the pincher end toward the center. Press the remaining ribbon over this glue strip.
9. Cut off any excess ribbon. This technique leaves the majority of the metal on the bottom of the hair clip exposed, making it easier to slide the clip into the hair. Seal the newly cut end of the ribbon before completely smoothing it in place with your fingers.
10. Glue a decorative button on the top center of the hair clip.
