Create A nineteen thirties Hat

A 1930s hat can provide shade, hide bad hair days and add style to any outfit.

With the end of the flapper era and the rise of the Great Depression, the 1930s brought in a great number of changes in lifestyle. This change trickled down into fashion. In an effort to keep their hair back while working in factories, women began using the snood, a type of crocheted hair net. They also began using small hats with a high crown or wide brim worn on an angle. Some popular hats of the era were the Florentine hat, cutlet hat, shoe hat, fruit basket hat and button plate hat. Many of these hats are still fashionable today, and you can even make your own. First, purchase a vintage hat pattern, available from Vogue patterns, such as V7464 and V8052, or make your own pattern.

Instructions

1. Measure the circumference of your head.

2. Draw a circle on a piece of paper with the same circumference found in step one. Mark with a pen 5/8 inch from all edges of the circle to account for the seam allowance.

3. Mark with a pen 7 inches from all edges of the circle made in step two. Adjust this measurement if you want a smaller or larger brim.

4. Cut along the edges of the circles made in step two and three. This will be the pattern for the brim of your hat.

5. Measure from the top of one of your ears to the top of the other ear. Add 1 2/8 inch to this measurement. This will be the length used for the top of your hat.

6. Draw on a piece of paper a rectangle that is five and 2/8 inch wide and with a length found in step 5. Cut out the rectangle.

7. Pin the rectangle and circle pattern pieces to the fabric. Cut along the edges of the pattern. Repeat this process until you have 6 rectangle pieces and two circle pieces of fabric.

8. Pin the circle pattern piece to the facing. Cut along the edges of the pattern. Repeat this process until you have 2 circle pieces of facing.

9. Lay the circle pieces of facing on top of the circle pieces of fabric. Iron in place.

10. Pin two rectangle pieces of fabric together, right sides facing inward. Sew along the two long edges of the rectangle. Repeat this with the other four rectangle pieces.

11. Flip the rectangle pieces right side out. Iron the pieces flat.

12. Pin the two circle pieces of fabric together, right sides facing inward. Sew along the outer edge of the circle.

13. Flip the circle piece right side out. Iron the piece flat.

14. Tuck the un-sewn edge of the rectangle piece inward, hiding the unfinished seam. Sew along this edge. Repeat with the unsewn edges of all the other rectangle pieces.

15. Tuck the unseen edge of the inside circle inwards to finish the circle piece. Sew along the inner edge of the circle.

16. Pin the rectangle pieces to the circle piece. One rectangle piece should extend over the top of the head from one ear to the other ear. The other two rectangle pieces should extend over the head to form an X, the upper part of the X extending from the location of the eyes. Sew the rectangle pieces in place.

17.Attach buttons at the base of each rectangle piece.
