Woven ribbon hair clips are easy to make and work well in fine or thicker hair. You can use this basic ribbon weaving technique alone for simple casual woven ribbon hair clips, or add bows, beads or buttons to accent your woven ribbon hair barrettes. Choose an alligator clip, a snap clip or a double-bar barrette as the basis for these woven ribbon hair bows, depending upon the type of hair and style you prefer.
Instructions
1. Cut a short length of 3/8-inch ribbon to cover the ends of your woven ribbon barrette. Seal the ends of the ribbon with a fray-stopping product or by passing the ends of the ribbon through the flame of a cigarette lighter. Apply glue to the back side of the ribbon. Glue over the end of the alligator clip, covering the bare ends and the hinge. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.
2. Cut 36 inches of 1/8-inch-wide ribbon; use satin or grosgrain ribbon. Stack the ribbons one on top of the other and place under the top part of the alligator clip. Start near the end of the clip, working toward the hinge. Secure the ribbon to the hair clip with a bit of glue.
3. Treat the ribbons as one while making your woven ribbon hair clip. Take one end of the ribbon and bring it over one bar of the alligator clip, then down and under the other bar. Repeat with the other length of ribbon.
4. Continue weaving the ribbon over and under the sides of the alligator hair clip, being careful not to twist the ribbons. Press the weaving snug against itself.
5. Apply a drop of glue to the underside of the ribbon weaving. Tie the ends around to the backside of the alligator clip hinge. Trim the ends, and tie beads or accents onto the ends. Weave the ends of the ribbon into the underside of the alligator hair clip for a cleaner look.
