Use colored thread or embroidery floss to secure your bows.
Save money by making your own designer hair bows. Create them in the shape, size and colors you want. Match them to specific outfits or create bows in the colors of every holiday. Make matching spiked stacked bows for sports teams, clubs or teams. Use printed ribbons and solid ribbons in the same bow to add depth and texture to the bow. Turn it into a ponytail holder by building it around a ponytail elastic instead of a barrette.
Instructions
1. Make your spike. Take two different colored ribbons that are cut to 22 inches and lay them down so they make a plus sign. Tie them together where they meet with embroidery floss. Leave about 6 inches of embroidery floss extending above and below the spike; you'll use this floss to tie the entire bow together when done stacking. Twist this spike so the ribbons make a tall, thin X shape with one ribbon of each color above the knot and and one of each color ribbon below the knot.
2. Make another spike that's 2/3 the size of the first and twist it so it's shaped like a shorter and fatter "X" shape. Cut the excess floss from this spike; do not cut the excess floss from the first spike. Put a dab of hot glue in the center of your large spike and glue the small spike to it so the ribbons create an asterisk shape.
3. Make your boutique bow. Cut your ribbon to 20 inches. The length of your ribbon is up to you, the longer the ribbon, the larger your boutique bow will be. Lay the ribbon right side down. Locate and draw a line at the center point of your ribbon.
4. Fold the top half of the ribbon down to the halfway mark, creating a large loop. Repeat this with the bottom portion of the ribbon, creating a loose figure eight, with the center line centered in the figure eight.
5. Pull the top of the figure eight to the center of your ribbon, creating two small bows above your center mark. Pull the bottom of the figure eight up, creating the same bows below the center point. Wind floss around the center of the ribbon and pull it taut, creating the crease that turns the ribbon into the bow. Tie the floss into a tight knot and trim away the excess floss. Make a second boutique bow, using ribbon that is 16 inches long.
6. Hot glue the largest of your boutique bows to the center of your spikes. Center and glue the smaller boutique bow to the middle of the larger one, again using hot glue and your hot glue gun. Pick up the embroidery floss tails that are laying below your bows and ribbons. Wind them around the center of your stacked bows and ribbons and tie them into at least three knots at the back of the bow. Cut away the excess floss.
7. Cut another ribbon slightly longer than the length of the longest spike. Tie it in a knot, making the knot centered on the ribbon. Hot glue the knot to the center of the bow, hiding the floss. Slide a hair barrette through the back of your spiked stacked bow and hot glue it in place.
