Gift wrapping, embellishing garments and making elaborate bows are a few crafting projects using ribbons. Incorporate a variety of ribbon from rich fabrics into trim such as faille, grosgrain and plush black velvet. Although ribbons have straight edges, picot and scalloped borders are also used to create decorative-edge finishes.
Rhinestone Votive Candle Holder
Decorative rhinestones or crystals will appear extra luxurious with a piece of black velvet ribbon. By stitching the taping to each edge of a 3-inch ribbon, you can easily transform it into a votive candle holder. Wrap the ribbon around your candle holder prior to cutting your ribbon's length. It is important to overlap the ends to attach snaps or a hook-and-eye fastener to ensure your ribbon remains in place. Make sure the ribbon's width does not overlap the candle holder's rim for safety when lit.
Bookmark
Make a special, decorative bookmark and keep your favorite book's pages free from folded corners. Cut a piece of cardboard or cardstock in your desired specifications and brush a light coating of fabric glue. Keep your velvet ribbon's width in mind prior to cutting your cardboard. Place the ribbon onto the cardboard and let dry for your brand's recommended time. You can also opt to use your hole punch and add an eyelet at the base of the bookmark with an eyelet setter and craft hammer. Add a decorative tassel through the eyelet to finish your bookmark and drape it over your book as an elegant touch.
Lace and Velvet Ribbon Headband
Hair accessories, such as headbands, are made from different textures as well as mixing different textile surfaces together. Measure the circumference of your head's crow with a flexible tape measure and cut two pieces of ribbon. You can insert and stitch a lace or tulle-like border in between the two pieces of velvet ribbon. Keep in mind that you will have to add elastic at each of your ribbon ends to secure the headband in place. Remember that velvet has significant pile and can spread when passing the ribbon through your sewing machine. It is beneficial to test your machine's sewing tension as well as straight foot attachment on a piece of ribbon scrap prior to stitching your project.
