Stiffen Bows

Fabric stiffeners
have been used for centuries.

Bows make beautiful, decorative accents for gifts, as well as great hair accessories. But sometimes they become limp and flat, falling short of their intended look. A bow can be treated to hold its shape and design, however, in just a few simple steps. Fabric stiffeners have been used for centuries on items such as shirts, collars and curtains. Commercial stiffeners are available that produce results ranging from just giving a little body to permanently hardening the item. Starches come in powder, liquid and spray and can be diluted for varying degrees of stiffness, giving your bow the firmness you desire.

Instructions

1. Place your bow on a clean, washable surface.

2. Arrange your bow's loops to the desired look, since the loops cannot be rearranged once they are sprayed with stiffener. Stuff the loops with tissue paper to hold them in place during spraying.

3. Hold the fabric stiffener 6-inches from the bow. Cover the bow with fabric stiffener, using light, even sprays. Use just enough stiffener to hold it in place.

4. Place the sprayed bow in a protected place and allow it to dry for 45 minutes. Remove the tissue paper when the bow is dry.
