Help Make Your Own Cheerleading Laces and ribbons

Cheerleaders and spectators can wear cheer ribbons to show their school spirit.

Cheerleading isn't just about getting the crowd fired up at sporting events. Cheerleaders also represent their school, and as such they need to be neat in appearance at all times. Cheerleaders can show off their school spirit and their school colors from their head to their toes. For the former, hair ribbons are quite useful. They can be made as a squad activity, or they can be made and sold as a school fundraising project.

Instructions

1. Cut each end of the 1-inch-wide and 1/2-inch wide ribbons in a "V," or use pinking shears and cut across the ends.

2. Lay the longer ribbon on a flat surface and center the shorter ribbon on top of it.

3. Fold the ribbons in half so that the wrong sides of the longer ribbon are touching.

4. Thread a sewing needle with 12 inches of matching thread. Tie a knot at the end of the thread. Push the needle through the ribbon at the fold, starting on the wrong side and pulling completely through until the knot is tight against the back of the ribbon. Wrap the thread around the ribbon several times; keep the thread tight while wrapping the ribbon. The ribbon will bunch together. Tie a knot to secure the thread but do not cut the thread.

5. Place the elastic ponytail holder on the wrong side of the ribbon on top of the center. Adjust the ribbons so they fall to the left and right of the holder.

6. Attach the elastic holder to the ribbon using the remaining thread. Wrap the thread several times around the holder until the holder feels secure. Tie a knot in the thread and cut the thread. Place a drop of craft glue on the knot to secure it.

7. Dab a drop of glue on one end of the 1/4-inch-wide ribbon and press it against the thread. Wait for the glue to dry and wrap the ribbon around the thread until there is no ribbon left. Add drops of glue to the wrong side of the ribbon as it is being wrapped and secure the end with glue.

8. Allow the glue to dry completely before using the ribbon in hair.
