Create various boutique bows using different ribbon colors and textures.
Boutique-style hair bows can be expensive to purchase but with a few craft supplies and materials, you can make your own bows for use or sell them to begin an at-home hair bow business. Glitz up the bows to complement formal or dress-up apparel like for a beauty pageant or playing princesses in your child's room. Hot glue a craft flower, butterfly or rhinestones to match the clothing colors or leave the bow plain for everyday wear.
Instructions
1. Cut a 16-inch-long section of 7/8-inch-wide ribbon and a second 4-inch-long piece of only 3/8-inch-wide ribbon in a different, but complementary color. Wave each cut end over a lit lighter to heat seal the edges and prevent fraying. Do not hold the ribbon in one place over the flame; it may result in ribbon browning or burning.
2. Lay your long ribbon face-down on your work surface and fold 4 inches of the ribbon over the center. Loop the remaining ribbon over the first fold and around the back of the ribbon, creating a four-layered loop with both ribbon ends on the same side of the loop.
3. Press a straight pin through the center of the loop to secure all layers in place. Insert your finger inside each loop end and pull apart the loops to make the bow look like two figure eight ribbons connected in the center. Arrange the loops to achieve the desired look.
4. Thread a needle and weave it in and out of the center of the separated ribbon loops, securing them together. Remove the straight pin and pull the thread tightly, creating a bunching effect in the center of the ribbon.
5. Wrap the remaining thread around the center of the ribbon, pass the needle through the center of the ribbon again and snip it off.
6. Tie the thinner 4-inch piece of complementary-colored ribbon in a loose knot in the center, leaving the ends intact. Position the knot over the front center of the ribbon loop to cover the thread.
7. Turn the bow and ribbon knot over, position a hair elastic or clip over the back of the bow and hot glue the ends of the thin ribbon knot together over the hair accessory.
