Tutorials on New Hairstyles
It's the 21st century and the newest, coolest hairstyles take inspiration from evergreen classics from the past-looks that suit anyone and let you put your own personal twist on them. No matter what your age or wardrobe, there's a new hairstyle for you.
Scene
Make a bold statement with the "scene" hairstyle, worn mostly by people in their teens or 20s. Get the basic scene look by getting your hair cut in layers-short layers at the top and longer layers at the bottom. Scene hair comes in many colors but the main choices are platinum blond, black and wild shades such as pink and purple. For wild colors, dye your hair platinum blond or white first so the colors will pop, or clip in hair extensions for a dash of color without the commitment.
Straighten your hair before you style it-scene hair is almost always pin-straight. Spray your hair with heat-protecting product before you flat iron it. Tease your hair at the crown by holding up narrow sections and combing them in quick, downward strokes. Spray the comb with hairspray first for a stronger hold. Tease as much as you can for maximum volume and lift-always flattering no matter what style you're going for-and decorate with small bows or other colorful hair accessories.
Side Ponytail
The "side pony" is a twist on a regular ponytail, versatile enough for formal events or a backyard barbecue. Curl your hair or straighten it. For the side pony, curls work best for a formal event such as a wedding, while wavy or straight hair works better for a more casual occasion.
Add volume at the top of your head by teasing your hair at the scalp with a comb. Gather your hair over to one side of your head and secure it in a ponytail with a hair elastic. Pin the opposite side with bobby pins to keep shorter layers from falling loose. If you have bangs, style them any way that works for you.
Short Chunky
The edgy short and chunky look-not too attached to a specific subculture-looks best with straight hair but works with wavy hair, too. Have your hair cut as short as you dare, but no shorter than two inches. Have your stylist cut asymmetrical layers or razor the ends to give them shape and texture. Style damp hair with hair wax, mousse or gel to keep frizz away and give it shape and texture.
