Pippi Longstocking, the adventurous children's book character, remains known as much for her hairstyle as here fictional antics. Pippi Longstocking hair features redhead braids sticking straight out from the head above the ears. Create this gravity-defying hairdo at home with a wig and a theatrical trick for holding Pippi's hair in place for a stage production, Halloween, class presentation or other creative event. Allow at least three hours to create this hair so you won't be rushed.
Instructions
1. Pour 5 inches of rocks marbles or sand into a small box. Wedge the base of the wig head into the top of the box. Wiggle the head with your hand to make sure it's stable. If it feels unsteady, add more weight. This will keep the head in place while you do the Pippi Longstocking hair.
2. Pin a long red wig on the Styrofoam head. Pin it along the hairline in the front and at the back of the neck.
3. Part the hair crookedly in the middle. Insert a line of pins from the front to the back along the part.
4. Divide the hair in half along the part and take half of the hair in one hand. Draw it from the end of the part at the back of the neck and from the front of the head and pull the hair gently straight out to the side.
5. Gather the hair together firmly right above the wig head's ear. Fasten the hair with a rubber band or hair elastic. Braid the hair firmly. Fasten the hair with a hair elastic 3 inches from the end.
6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the other half of the Pippi Longstocking hair.
7. Take apart a wire coat hanger by untwisting the end of the wire below the hook. Use a needle nose pliers to get the wire unwrapped, if needed.
8. Hold one braid by the bottom hair elastic. Push the wire through the middle of the hair elastic and up the middle of the Pippi Longstocking braid. Push the wire all the way through the top hair elastic.
9. Unpin the wig from the wig stand.
10. Push the top end of the wire into the hair above the top of the braid. Feel underneath the wig cap to make sure you don't poke it through the wig cap. Bend the wire in a half oval shape and push the top end of the wire through the hair across the top of the wig and down into the top elastic.
11. Push the end of the wire all the way through the second braid and out the end of the bottom elastic. Leave the wire end free.
12. Carefully try the wig on, or fit it on the wig stand or the person who will wear it. Keep control of the ends of the wires so no one gets poked.
13. Check the fit of the wire across the top of the head. Pull the wire further apart if it's too tight across the head. If a braid sticks out too high, pull the wire down on that side.
14. Remove the wig. Cut the wire so there's only an inch of wire left below the bottom hair elastic of the second braid. Grip the end of the wire with the needle nose pliers and bend it around the hair elastic twice. Bend the tip of the wire into the hair so it won't poke anyone. Bend the braids upward to look like Pippi Longstocking's hair.
15. Cut two 6-inch ribbons and tie a bow over the hair elastic on each side. Check that it hides the wire.
