Theme Ideas for Family Costumes
Dressing up for a Halloween or masquerade party can be a creative adventure, especially if the entire family dresses up with costumes that represent a theme. This is a wonderful way to make delightful memories for the whole gang. The pictures will make a hilarious family portrait for Christmas cards or to share with friends.
Television Families
Dress your family at up as famous TV family such as "The Brady Bunch," "The Munsters," or your favorite soap opera or mobster family. You can gather costumes from the 70's or any era at thrift stores, garage sales and maybe in your attic. Creative and colorful costumes can represent characters from the show "Sesame Street" and there are enough characters that all family members can express their own personalities.
Restaurant Family
Your loved ones can dress up as a family who own a mom-and-pop restaurant. Dad can play the part of the crazy manager in his shirt and tie and mom can be the disheveled fry cook with her spatula. The daughter can be a gum-popping server with her pad and pencil and the son can be a lazy kitchen helper carrying a plastic tub filled with plastic dishes and food.
Fairy Tale or Book Costume
If your family loves to read you can all think up costumes that surround a storybook theme such as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Berenstain Bears," or you can represent the different characters in the book "Little Women."
Native American Family
A Native American theme would be fun for all members of your family and the costumes would be easy to put together. Dad could play an Indian chief, the mom can carry her little baby in a papoose, the daughter can be making moccasins, and the son could be a great hunting warrior with his bow and arrow.
Blue Man Group
You can dress your whole family up as the "Blue Man Group." Just have everyone don some blue swim caps, add some blue face paint and have everyone wear black clothing. Rock Band
Dress the whole family up in hip clothes, put on fake tattoos and piercings, have everyone wear sunglasses and have everyone spike their hair for a rock-and-rolling good time. The Parents magazine website offers a handful of suggestions. (See the link in the Resources section below.) Have someone carry a toy guitar and have someone else jiggle a tambourine.
