Tie A Layered Bow

Layered bows use stacks of ribbon loops to make very large, tall, beautiful bows. They’re perfect for decorating extra fancy gifts, or decorating a room for a party. You can make all of the layers from the same color ribbon, or use different colors for each layer (such as the bride’s favorite colors for a wedding shower, or pink and blue for a baby shower). To make a layered bow, you’ll need ribbon (the slick, stiff kind made especially for wrapping gifts works best) as well as narrow wire, such as floral wire or bow-tying wire. You can find this kind of wire in many craft stores or online. You can make just two layers of ribbon for the bow, or many more.

Instructions

1. Hold the ribbon where you want the bow to start. (You may want to leave some loose ribbon on the end for a tail).

2. Make a loop in the ribbon the size you want the bow. Make sure the ribbon is facing right side out. Hold the loop together between your fingers.

3. Twist the ribbon, then make another loop in the opposite direction, the same size as the first. (The twist keeps the ribbon right side out).

4. Continue making loops on top of each other, alternating sides, until you have six to eight loops or the number you want. Trim the ribbon so that the tail on this side is the same length as the tail on the other side. Cut the ends of the ribbon at an angle, or cut a V-shaped notches in the ends of the ribbon.

5. Wrap a piece of wire around the center of the bow, and twist it together underneath the bow like a twist tie. The wire should be snug enough to hold the bow together, yet loose enough to allow you to adjust the ribbon loops.

6. Fluff out the ribbon loops to make a bow. This will be the base of the layered bow.

7. Make one or more additional bows the same way. For the top bow, make a small loop of ribbon in the center of the bow before cutting the tail of the ribbon. Insert the wire through this loop so that bow has a nice center.

8. Stack the bows on top of each other. Twist the wires on the backside of the bows around the center of the bow underneath. Cut off the excess wire using wire cutters.
