Prevent Damage
Babies' hair is usually very fine, thin and tends to grow slowly. As such, it is important not to put any hair accessories in your baby's hair, especially those that can cause breakage. Things like hair ties, barrettes and clips can all cause your baby's hair to break. If you wish to put a bow in your baby's hair attach it with a loosely fitting band. Avoid putting styling products in your infant's hair, as well, as most are made for adult hair and are harsh and drying.
Hair Care
Brush your baby's hair with a soft-bristled brush made especially for babies. This will increase circulation to your baby's scalp and encourage hair growth. It will also ward off cradle cap, which is a condition where your baby's scalp can get scaly. If your baby is African American, you may want to massage a little olive oil onto the scalp to add moisture.
Occasionally trimming the wispy ends of your infant's hair can make it appear thicker. Be extremely careful if you decide to clip your baby's hair yourself. Do not wash your baby's hair more than once or twice per week. Your infant's scalp is extremely sensitive and over-washing his hair can dry it out.
Natural Processes
Many times the hair that a baby is born with will gradually fall out and be replaced by more permanent hair. Brushing your infant's hair can help speed the process of shedding and help encourage the growth of the permanent hair. It is also common for a baby to develop a moon-shaped bald spot on the back of her head where her head meets the mattress when she lies on her back. Giving your baby plenty of time on her tummy will help prevent this.
