Perform A Pump Inside Your Hair

Do a hair pump in your hair for a trendy, voluminous style.

A hair pump--also known as a hair bump or poof--helps create a unique, trendy hairstyle that adds volume and definition to the hair. This is one of most popular hairstyles today. You can choose to do a hair pump using only the top bit of your hair at the front of the head or the entire top half section of your hair. With a bit of practice, you can learn to do a pump in your hair in only a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Section your hair. Twist up the hair you do not want included in the pump, and clip it out of the way. If you plan to use the whole top half of your hair, clip the bottom section out of the way. For a smaller pump at the top of your head, only keep a 2- or 3-inch width of hair out for the pump.

2. Take a 1-inch piece of this sectioned hair, and lift it up on a 45 degree angle towards the front of your head.

3. Spray hairspray in a downward motion on the roots of the hair.

4. Backcomb this section of hair by moving a fine-toothed comb in deep, slow strokes up and down the first few inches of hair near the roots. You are pulling the hair shafts in a backwards motion, which creates lift and volume in the hair.

5. Backcomb the rest of the hair left out for the pump. You may need to go over certain sections more than once, and, each time you backcomb over the hair, you get more volume.

6. Pull the backcombed hair toward the back of your head, smoothing strands slightly with your fingers as you do. You do not want to lose any of the height in your hair, but you do want to ensure the pump looks neat and not messy.

7. Pin the hair with bobby pins. Depending on the thickness of your hair and the size of the pump in your hair, you may need to use fewer or more bobby pins to secure. As you are pinning the hair, you can push forward slightly on the hair to create more of a poof. The more you push hair, the higher your pump will be.

8. Spray hairspray over the hair pump to set the look and help it keep its shape.
