Ribbon selection is important in bow-making.
Tails down bows consist of four uniform ribbon loops and two long tails that hang below the bow. Popular for babies, young girls and cheerleaders, tails down bows can be attached to ponytail holders, barrettes, headbands and alligator clips. This type of bow also adds a stylish flair to gift packages. With the vast array of printed ribbon fabrics now available, the fashion limits are endless.
Instructions
1. Trim each ribbon end into a V-shape.
2. Seal the ribbon ends with the lit candle. Leave the candle sitting on a sturdy, flat surface and quickly pass the tightly pulled ribbon through the flame as quickly as possible in a left-to-right motion.
3. Locate the center of the ribbon and lightly mark it on the wrong side with a fabric pencil.
4. Determine the length you would like each tail to be and mark equal lengths along the ribbon. From left to right, label equal points A, B, C, D and E, with C being the center point.
5. Hold point D with the right hand and point B with the left hand to begin forming the four loops.
6. Place point D on top of point B with the right side of the ribbon facing upward.
7. Form an X where these two points meet and secure them with an alligator clip.
8. Hold the alligator clip with the right hand and the center of the loop, point C, with the left hand.
9. Relocate the alligator clip atop point C, holding points D, B and C all in the left hand. This forms the bottom two loops.
10. Make a left loop and situate point E between the alligator clip and point C.
11. Place point A between points E and C to form the right loop.
12. Adjust the ribbon center to even out all four loops, keeping a tall, thin X shape in the center.
13. Fold down the top and bottom edges to create at least three accordion folds at the center of the bow.
14. Secure the bow with the bent tying wire. Twist the bow itself to tighten the wire.
15. Cut the remaining wire ends with wire cutters.
16. Fluff out the loops and draw the tails down until they are even with one another.
