Korked ribbons look similar to exploding fireworks.
Girls of any age might enjoy making and wearing special red, white and blue hair bows that mimic the look of a firecracker exploding in the sky. A craft technique called "korking" produces spiral-curled ribbons that spring from the hair bow and do just that. A korked hair bow made in patriotic colors is the perfect accessory for this year's Fourth of July festivities. You and your group could also sell red, white and blue hair bows at the summer craft fair to raise money for your special projects.
Instructions
Making Korker Ribbon
1. Cut a 1/4-inch dowel to approximately 16 inches long with garden pruners.
2. Wrap 3/8-inch wide grosgrain ribbon around the length of the dowel, securing it at both ends with a clothespin. Use a variety of shades and patterns in red, white and blue. Keep your wraps tight and close together to create a tight, bouncy spiral.
3. Lay the dowel on a cookie sheet and place it in an oven preheated to 275 degrees. Heat for approximately 25 minutes. Allow the dowels to cool on a cooling rack and gently remove the curled ribbon from the dowel. Make approximately 30 korkers.
Making a Korker Hair Bow
4. Cut your korker ribbons into 2 1/2-inch lengths.
5. Stack and pile 30 to 50 cut ribbons together evenly on top of an 8- to 12-inch piece of elastic string.
6. Position the string in the middle of the stack and bring both ends together, scooping up all the ribbons.
7. Tie the string tightly and wrap it around the bundle a second time. Tie it again and place a small dab of quick-drying glue on the knot.
8. Paint each end of each ribbon with clear nail polish to prevent fraying. Hot-glue the bow to the back of a lined hair clip.
Lining an Alligator Clip
9. Run a thin line of hot glue down the length of one side of a hair clip.
10. Cover the clip with grosgrain ribbon that is as close as possible to the same width as the clip.
11. Turn the clip over, glue and ribbon the second side. Cover the entire clip and neatly trim away excess ribbon. Paint the raw edge of the ribbon with clear nail polish.
