Mad Hatter Teen Costume Ideas

The Mad Hatter is one of the funnier characters in the classic tale "Alice in Wonderland." He provides comic relief in the story, and his goofy behavior makes him an enjoyable character for teens to portray, either for a costume party or a production of some kind. Although he has a certain look, it is still one that can be altered without taking away from the original premise.

What He Wears

The Mad Hatter wears a pair of pants of average length; they are neither too long nor too short. In some depictions, the pants are checked, but solid colors are fine. They should, however, be a bolder color than ordinary suit pants. He also wears a topcoat, vest, white shirt, ascot and, of course, a top hat.

If your goal is to match the Mad Hatter as he was portrayed in Walt Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," the pants should be green, grass-colored or slightly darker. If you merely wish to portray the character, then purple is a good choice. Checked pants, either black and gray or black and white, can also be worn.

The Disney character is portrayed wearing an olive-green topcoat, but black or deep purple, if those colors were not chosen for the pants, is fine. The vest is bluish-gray on the Walt Disney character, but a Halloween-orange one adds a splash of color to the alternate costume.

The shirt is white, for both costumes, and should have a large enough collar so that the majority of it shows above the topcoat. The Mad Hatter wears his collar turned up.

The top hat for the Walt Disney character is one shade darker than the green pants, but no darker, with a band that matches the bluish-grey vest. For the alternate costume, a black or deep purple hat is fine. If you choose purple pants, the hat should be a much deeper purple.

The neckwear can be an aquamarine or similar color bow tie for the Disney-style costume, or a black or other dark color tie knotted around the neck like a regular necktie for the alternate costume. If you choose this type of tie, a tie pin or tie tack can be added.

Walt Disney's character wears shoes to match the vest; but black ones are fine for the alternate costume. They can either be boots with a turned-down cuff or any old-fashioned type of shoe; either style will work well with both costumes

Where to Find Costume Pieces

All this clothing may sound expensive, but it does not have to be. A thrift shop or vintage clothing store will most likely have every item.

The size should be large enough to fit comfortably, but slightly oversize is fine, too. Roll the pants up so that they are of average length.

Accessories

The top hat on the Disney character says, "10/6" written in a flowery, English Gothic style of print. In other pictures of the Mad Hatter, the hat has a label that says "In This Style 10/6", also in the flowery, English Gothic script. This is one accessory that one should really try to obtain, as it appears in almost all pictures of the Mad Hatter.

Other accessories can include a pocket watch, in as large a size as possible, and accessories for drinking tea, such as a teapot and teacup. The more eccentric or old-fashioned the tea accessories look, the better.
