Strategies For Making Hair Bows

The right accessories can really make an outfit come together. For young girls, a common accessory is a hair bow. These bows are not only colorful and cute, but also easy to make. A little creativity and patience, along with some helpful tips, are all you need to make a perfectly coordinated hair bow for any outfit.

Choose Your Hair Bow Style

Hair bows come many different styles. To select an appropriate style, consider various qualities of the girl who will be wearing it: age, activity level, and preference for hair accessories. While some girls don't mind wearing large bows in their hair, others will be irritated with a large clip. Since each style is decorated differently, select your clip first.

Spring latch--Made of either metal or plastic; secures the hair by squeezing two prongs into a hinged latch.

Snap Clip Barrettes--Two thin pieces of metal that are attached on one end; secures the hair by squeezing it between the top and bottom pieces and snapping it into place.

Pinch Clips--Metal or plastic alligator clips; uses small teeth to secure hair to the clip

Headbands--Either a loop of elastic material or a piece of flexible plastic in a horseshoe-shape

Get Creative With Colors and Materials

Hair bows can be made with a variety of materials, such as ribbons, fabric flowers, colorful shoelaces, buttons, feathers and cute trinkets. Typically they are glued or wired to the base hair clip. Don't be afraid to use multiple colors--hair bows are supposed to be fun. If you're trying to coordinate the hair bow with a specific outfit, select colors that match or complement the outfit.

To personalize the hair bow, use alphabet beads to spell out the child's name or nickname. String the beads on a thin wire and attach the wire securely to the hair clip. Young girls enjoy getting personalized hair bows as a gift--- use their name or an affectionate term, such as "Princess," "Angel" or "Sweetheart."

Keep It Safe

Although it may seem silly to be talking about safety measures with hair bows, there are actually a few things you should keep in mind when making these. If the hair bow will be worn by a baby or toddler, be cautious of the items you attach to the bow. Avoid attaching small objects, like buttons that could be a choking hazard. If you do use small objects, be sure to attach them to the hair clip securely--use a strong glue or sew them on tightly. Check these regularly and re-glue or re-sew them if necessary.

If you use thin wire to attach ribbons or decorations to a hair clip, take precautions to keep the wire ends away from sensitive skin. Although these ends do not feel very sharp, they could scratch the child. Tuck the ends under and glue them securely to the hair clip. Again, check this regularly and re-glue the ends if necessary.
