How Does A Professional Cheerleader Earn A Living?
Flip-flopping around an athletic arena, rousing fans and heckling rivals may seem like an easy route to a substantial paycheck, but the reality of professional cheerleading is far from simple. Many of these young athletes spend a lifetime preparing for their spot on a squad and still must constantly work to maintain their prowess. Although professional cheerleading can be an exciting and memorable experience, there are many considerations before one can make a living at it. There is quite a bit more to the job of professional cheerleader than what is observed at a sporting event.
Primary Income
The primary source of income for a professional cheerleader is usually a different full- or part-time job in addition to the spot on the cheerleading squad. Many cheerleaders double as college students or full-time mothers. Although professional cheerleading requires a substantial commitment, the financial payoff is often minimal. Rehearsals generally take place in the evening, leaving the traditional 9-5 day-shift hours free for regular employment; however, many athletic organizations do not compensate cheerleaders for rehearsal time.
Game-day performances occur on the weekends. Cheerleaders are paid either by the hour or by the game. Either way, the amount of money is nominal and usually considered supplementary income.
Additional Income
A position on a professional cheerleading squad often comes with additional opportunities to earn money in the entertainment industry. The physical requirements for making a squad require an extremely fit body type and often include a maximum weight. Also, audition guidelines use terms such as "poise" and "personal appearance" to suggest that candidates be aesthetically pleasing. As a result, many cheerleaders are offered side jobs modeling beauty or athletic clothing and equipment, or representing professional organizations with public appearances and product promotion. Cheerleaders also teach dance and cheer camps during the off-season to children and future potential candidates.
