Make a hair clip as cute as a ladybug.
Hair bows can be expensive, but if you have the right supplies and instructions, you can make them at home yourself and hopefully save a few bucks. For something fun and different, try making a hair bow that looks like a ladybug. The ladybug hair bow can be secured on an alligator clip, or it can be glued onto an elastic band, depending on your personal preference. This little bow is unique and can be paired with a matching red outfit for a cute look.
Instructions
The Ladybug Hairbow
1. Cut two thin strips from the black grosgrain ribbon to create the ladybug's antennas. They should be thin and one inch in length. Hold the antennas, one at a time, with tweezers and use your other hand to quickly run the flame of a lighter over the ribbon. This will seal the edges. To create a bend in the antenna, hold the flame in the middle of the ribbon for a couple of seconds and it will naturally bend. Use the tweezers to form it more if necessary.
2. Cut a four-inch piece of the red grosgrain ribbon. Use the lighter to quickly seal the edges to keep them from fraying. On a flat surface, hold one end down with your finger. Take the other end and bring it around, placing it on top of the first end so they are flush. Glue or sew the ends together.
3. Cut a three-inch piece of red grosgrain ribbon. Use the lighter to seal the edges. Hold one end down on a flat surface as before and again loop the other end around and stack it on top of the first. Sew or glue together.
4. Take both loops you have created and turn them over so you are looking at the undersides. Place the smaller loop inside the larger loop, either joining the pointed tips flush together or keeping the smaller tip a little higher than the bigger tip (depending on how you want the bug body to look). Sew or glue together.
5. Cut a one-inch piece of black grosgrain ribbon and seal the edges with the lighter.
6. Turn the red bug body over so you are looking at the side with the dots. Place the black one-inch piece of ribbon over the pointed tip of the bug body and glue into place. Turn the body over and place a dab of glue on either end of the black ribbon. Fold the black ribbon over the underside of the red point and press into place.
7. Line the alligator clip with the green grosgrain ribbon, gluing it down and covering all areas. Glue the antennas down about 1/4 inch from the top of the clip so they are even and the bends go in opposite directions, like mirrored upside down "L's".
8. Place a small dab of glue on top of the antennas where they were just glued down, and extend a thin strip down the center of the clip to glue down the bug body. Place the body, right side up, on the clip, making sure the front tip is on top of the antennas. Press into place. If you prefer to use an elastic band, simply glue the antennas and bug body onto a green hair elastic instead.
