Raccoon tails or 'coontails is a hair-dyeing technique that places rings of color around sections of hair. These rings resemble the rings on a raccoon's tail, hence the name. Creating a raccoon tail in your hair is quite simple and can be done with hair dye or hair bleach. Once you have mastered the art of raccoon tails, try varying the colors for a look that's even more distinctive.
Instructions
1. Comb your dry hair with a wide-toothed comb. Using a wide-toothed comb will help to prevent snagging, knots and breaking of the hair.
2. Clip your hair on top of your head, except for the section that you are dyeing.
3. Wrap small strips of tape around your hair. Start as close to the scalp as you can and work you way down. Evenly space the strips of tape. The length of your hair will determine the space between each tape section. For long hair,1/2 inch between tape sections works well.
4. Apply the hair dye over the hair using the tinting brush. Avoid applying the dye over the masking tape. Even though the tape should protect the hair from becoming dyed, it may not. Repeat on additional sections of hair if desired.
5. Allow the dye to set according to package directions. Rinse away the dye with warm water. The masking tape should slide off the hair went it becomes wet. If it does not, use a pair scissors to gently cut it away. Dry and style as you normally would.
