Make a heart door hanger to keep or share.
Here's a Valentine's Day project that children and adults will enjoy completing. Door hangers made from red felt will dress up a door and are light enough to hang from the wall with a thumbtack. Kids not only will take pleasure in making the heart but decorating the finished heart as well. Set aside an afternoon to make this inexpensive Valentine's Day project.
Instructions
1. Fold a standard size sheet of paper in half and trace one half of a heart on the paper. Cut along the trace line and open the sheet for a full-size heart. Experiment until you get the size you prefer.
2. Place the open paper heart on top of the felt and trace an outline of the heart. Cut two hearts to make a back and front for the door hanger.
3. Thread a darning needle with 1 foot of white yarn. Darning needles are slightly longer and thicker than a standard needle and have a large eye.
4. Place the felt hearts together and hold in place with safety pins. Insert the needle near the heart tip, starting at the back of the heart. Pull the needle through and leave a 6-inch tail of yarn.
5. Continue to stitch the heart together and stop at the last 3 to 4 inches, but do not cut the yarn.
6. Fill the inside of the heart with cotton filler. Continue to stitch the remaining heart and leave a 6-inch tail. Tie the two tails together in a small bow and let the tails hang.
7. Cut two 12-inch ribbons and attach to the back of the heart. Stitch the one end of each ribbon to the curved part of the heart. Join the loose ends of the ribbon together with a small bow.
8. Cut and glue felt pieces to embellish the heart. Cut smaller hearts or letters to make the word "LOVE."
