Valentine Costume Ideas

Celebrate Valentine's Day with an appropriately playful costume.

Valentine's Day is one of America's most popular holidays. More than five percent of all chocolate sales take place during this time. Americans give gifts, create romantic dinners and make plans with their closest loved ones. Many also choose to dress up in daring costumes to celebrate. A Valentine costume should ideally embrace the theme of the season and showcase your creativity.

Poker Costume

If you or your significant other love to play cards, surprise her with a costume that calls to mind her favorite game of chance. Create a pair of glasses designed to resemble cards. Glue a high scoring hand of cards together so that the edges of each card can be seen. Cut out the middle of the card in the shape of a diamond so that your eyes can be seen. Glue the cards to a pair of over-the counter-glasses.

Put on a bright green top and pair of pants in a shade of green resembling a poker table. Cut out a circle from a large piece of black cardboard. Cut out a smaller circle from a piece of white cardboard. Write the word poker on it and glue it on top of the larger piece of cardboard. Place poker chips in a decorative pattern around the edges of the cardboard. Tape the finished cardboard to your green top and bottom.

Embrace Your Royal Side

Transform into the Queen of Hearts. Cut out hearts in various sizes from pink and red paper. Buy or make a tiara. Glue the hearts to the tiara. Buy a piece of red felt large enough to fit around your upper body. Pin or tape to an old black long- sleeved shirt. The felt should cover your entire torso. Buy white netting. Pin or tape to an old white skirt. The netting should completely cover the skirt. Cut out hearts at least three inches in diameter from pink and red paper. Glue the hearts to the netting.

Become Cupid

Cupid is a traditional symbol of Valentine's Day. Make your own version into a memorable costume. Cut out a pair of wings out of lightweight cardboard. The wings should extend past your back in both directions so they can be seen from the front. Glue large red feathers on top of the wings. Glue the wings to a white shirt. Make cupid's bow and arrow. Cut out a bow shape from a piece of white cardboard. Cut out one hole at each end of the cardboard. Run a red ribbon through each end of the cardboard to connect it and form the bow. Cut out arrows from paper. Attach to the bow with matching ribbon. Complete the costume with a red or pink skirt.

Bouquet of Flowers

Turn yourself into a walking gathering of flowers. Make your limbs into stems by putting on a green top and green skirt or pair of pants. Wrap your torso in brown or white thin paper to stimulate the paper base of the bouquet. Buy artificial flowers in various shades of red. Carefully glue the flowers to a piece of large cardboard. Cut out the cardboard in a fan shape. Tape or glue the cardboard and flowers to your torso. Add additional artificial flowers to your hair to complete the costume.
