Hello Kitty is popular with children and adults alike. Simple graphic details in this Sanrio character lend themselves to crochet, so you can easily create your own toys. Hello Kitty is also a great choice if you are just learning Japanese crochet techniques, thanks to the simplicity of the figure.

Crochet Japanese Hello Kitty
1. Find a pattern or chart for a Hello Kitty or create one yourself. There are a few available online and a few Japanese cat crochet patterns that can be modified to look more like Hello Kitty. The crochet patterns should produce a fairly flat, two-dimensional figure. The key identifiers include a yellow oval nose, black features and a round head. You can also buy a wide variety of Japanese Hello Kitty patterns in books and pamphlets from online sellers. These have easy-to-read and understand charts. You may also be able to adapt a Hello Kitty cross-stitch pattern using a single crochet stitch for each cross on the chart.
2. Try crocheting a simple Hello Kitty head using basic amigurumi crochet techniques. This will make a zipper pull for a backpack, doorknob hanger or other decorative item, and is a great way to practice typical Japanese crochet techniques like those used in Japanese crochet charts. Start by chaining two stitches, using a hook smaller than you would usually choose for your weight of yarn.
3. Make six single crochets in the second chain from your hook. You will be crocheting in a continuous round. You can use a safety pin or split marker to note the beginning of the round. On the next round, do two single crochets in each stitch around. For round 3, single-crochet in the next stitch, then make two single crochets in the following around. On round 4, make two single crochets in every third stitch and, on round 5, in every fourth stitch.
4. Single-crochet all stitches on rounds 6 through 10. On round 11, single-crochet three stitches, then decrease by one. On round 12, single-crochet two stitches, then decrease one single crochet.
5. Single-crochet one stitch on round 13, then decrease one stitch around the round. At the end of round 13, embroider two small eyes, a yellow oval shaped nose and whiskers. Hello Kitty traditionally does not have a mouth. Stuff firmly, but push to create a flatter, rather than rounder, shape. Decrease around the final crochet row and thread the remaining thread end through the stitches, pulling tight to close.
6. Make two ears, beginning by chaining two and single-crocheting five stitches into the second chain from the hook. Single-crochet in each stitch on the first round, then two single crochets in each stitch on round two. Single-crochet in each stitch on round 3 and tie off, leaving enough yarn to sew the ear onto the crochet Hello Kitty head. Stitch in place and add a ribbon bow in front of Hello Kitty's ear.
