The industry of hair extensions is huge. With extensions becoming the norm for wedding days, special events and celebrities, there's no longer a stigma to wearing fake hair. Everyone from teenage girls to women wanting more volume look to hair extensions to add some oomph to their 'do. Selling hair extensions is a great way to capitalize on this new practice.

1. Choose how you're going to sell your hair extensions. Starting a business is a big task, especially if you don't have any experience starting or running one. Decide if you're going to take out retail space (which requires substantial overhead) or if you're going to sell your hair extensions online. Neither is more successful than the other, it's just a matter of finding what makes you most comfortable and allows your business to flourish.


2. Purchase a domain name. If you are going the route of selling hair extensions online, purchase a domain name. While selling on eBay is a great way to reach out to people, having your own website in conjunction with an eBay store will give you a place for repeat clients to visit and tell their friends, who might not be familiar with shopping on eBay.


3. Build your website. If you have some experience with web design and HTML, you might be able to build your own website. If not, look to a web designer to do the job for you. Put up a sign at a local university or place an ad on a site like Craigslist to let people know you're looking for a web designer. You might be able to find a student looking to add to their portfolio who will do the job for far less than a professional web designer.


4. Find your retail space. If you do not want to sell hair extensions online, find the retail space that will suit your business. Leasing a kiosk in a mall is great for a small business like selling hair extensions. You can also make appearances at large indoor flea markets. To sell hair extensions, you do not have to lease an actual store, which can be expensive and too large for such a venture.


5. Set up a merchant account. Being able to take several types of payment will benefit you as a business owner. You never want to miss a sale simply because the client did not have your preferred form of payment. For a fee, you can set up a merchant account, which allows you to receive credit card and debit payments. This is easier in the long run and allows your clients to pay however they feel the most comfortable.


6. Market your hair extensions. Have brochures or handouts made up that advertise your hair extensions. Include all of the hair extensions you sell, as well as a general pricing system so potential clients know what to expect should they visit your store. If you have an online store, add portions to the website that give clients tips for wearing and caring for their hair extensions. When selling in person, go over this information thoroughly with a customer.
