Pigtails are a popular hair style for little girls.
Pigtails are adorable on young children, creating a very sweet and playful look. They are also very practical for active children, since they keep the hair out of the face and off of the neck. Often, pigtails are accessorized with bows or other decorative hair pieces. Bows for pigtails are easy to make at home, as they require very minimal needlework.
Instructions
1. Cut a piece of ribbon that is 1 inch longer than twice the desired length of the bow. For instance, if you want a 2-inch bow, cut 5 inches of ribbon.
2. Loop the ribbon, overlapping the edges by approximately 1/2 inch. Hold the center of the looped ribbon where the edges overlap between two fingers. Poke a threaded needle through the center of the ribbon (the midpoint of both the width and the length).
3. Pull the tread until the knot catches on the side where you initiated the stitch. Wrap the thread around the short side of the bow several times, pulling tightly to manipulate the looped ribbon into the shape of a bow. Tie a knot to secure the thread, and cut excess thread.
4. Hot-glue the bow to an elastic hair band. Ideally, use a small band, since pigtails are not as thick as single ponytails. Use a small dab of hot glue, about the size of the eraser on a pencil, to attach the center of the bow to the hair band.
5. Add a small button or accessory to the bow if desired. Use the hot glue gun to attach the button to the top center of the bow.
