If you enjoy making your own cake decorations, then consider making a chocolate ribbon cake topper for your next cake. Making cakes requires a lot of practice, and it is important to know the various techniques involved in decorating the cakes. Chocolate bows make elegant cake toppers because they guests can enjoy their beauty through taste and sight. The chocolate mixture used to make the chocolate ribbon can be prepared 2 days in advance, and only require less than 1 hour to assemble. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Place the unwrapped dark chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 1 minute, or until the chocolate melts completely.
2. Add light corn syrup to the bowl. Mix the melted chocolate and corn syrup.
3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Set the bowl out at room temperature for 4 hours. Refrigerate the chocolate for 15 to 20 minutes if it appears too soft after 4 hours.
4. Sprinkle a 10 by 11 inch sheet of wax paper with powdered cocoa. Pour half of the melted chocolate mixture on the wax paper. Place another sheet of wax paper over the poured chocolate. Use a rolling pin to roll the chocolate out to a 9 by 10 inch rectangle.
5. Use a sharp knife to cut the rectangle into ribbons. Cut out 9 strips of chocolate ribbon. The strips need to be 4 by 1 inch wide.
6. Sprinkle another sheet of wax paper, 6 by 15 inches, with powdered cocoa. Pour the rest of the melted chocolate mixture onto the wax paper. Cover the melted chocolate with another sheet of waxed paper. Roll the wax paper out to a 5 x 14 inch rectangle.
7. Cut the rectangle into two 14-inch ribbons. Cut a small V-shape on each end of the chocolate strip, to resemble the end of a ribbon.
8. Refrigerate the chocolate strips until you are ready to make your cake topper. Leave the chocolate strips on the wax paper until you are ready to make your chocolate ribbon.
9. Remove the two 14-inch ribbons from the wax paper. Drape these ribbons over the cake, crossing them at the center of the cake. This will create an "x shape" on the top of your cake.
10. Remove each small ribbon strip from the wax paper. Shape the strips into bows. Bring one end of the chocolate ribbon to the other end of the ribbon, which will create a loop. Pinch two ends together.
11. Arrange the loops in the center of the cake where the two 14-inch ribbons meet. Place 3 loops directly in the center of the cake, in a circle shape, and add 6 loops around the 3 loops. This will create your bow for your chocolate ribbon.
