Make Covered Button Hair Add-ons

A covered button accessory is small enough to wear while playing sports.

A matching hair accessory ties a whole outfit together. Ribbons and bows are the most common hair ornaments, but sometimes you want something less frilly. Cover a button with fabric that matches your outfit for a tailored hair ornament. Attach the button to a covered-elastic hairband and use it to tie up your ponytail. Any size button will work for this accessory. Use a large button to show off an attention getting print fabric, or cover a small one with a solid fabric for a little girl's ponytail.

Instructions

1. Cut a circle of fabric using the pattern from the covered button kit.

2. Place the button mold on a sturdy, flat surface with the open side up.

3. Center the fabric circle on top of the mold, with the right side of the fabric down.

4. Place the button top in the center of the circle with the convex side down. Press the button top down on the fabric until the top is pressed into the mold as far as it will go. The fabric will be sticking straight up around the edges of the top. If the edges are not even, remove the button top and the fabric and try again. This may require several attempts.

5. Pull the edges of the fabric up, until the pleats around the edges are even. Hold the button top in the mold with your finger as you pull. This creates a button with smooth edges.

6. Fold the edges of the fabric straight into the center of the button top. The fabric will form folds around the edges. Keep these folds perpendicular to the edges. This will allow you to attach the button back securely.

7. Place the button back on the center of the button top and cover it with the shank protector from the button kit. Rap the shank protector several times with a hammer to drive the back into the top.

8. Pinch a covered-elastic hairband to make a fold in one side. Stick this fold through the shank of the button until you have a 1/2-inch loop on the other side. Pinch the opposite of the band and stick it through this loop, pulling it through until the hairband is wrapped tightly around the shank of the button. This is the same kind of loop you use to attach a tag to an item.
