Short Cuts for Black Women
Whether your hair is naturally curly, kinky or straightened, short styles are great ways to make a statement. Though these cuts may be more maintenance than longer cuts (no ponytails to fall back on here), above-the-shoulder hair styles are equally classic and current. Short styles for black women normally fall into three general categories: pixie cuts, bobs and asymmetrical.
Pixie haircut
A pixie haircut is a very closely cropped haircut that is generally worn only an inch or two long in the front and less than an inch long in the back and sides. For curly and kinky textures, the hair is generally chemically or thermally straightened while the style is worn. To style, the front is either curled upward or downward while the back and sides are generally either brushed flat or barrel-curled with a very small curling iron. Variations of this style include longer hair in the front (up to about five inches long), while keeping the back cropped.
The Bob
A bob is a classic hairstyle that can be adapted for many different hair textures. It is a blunt cut that is usually accompanied with a closely cropped, tapered nape. The length varies and anything as short as ear-length and as long as shoulder-length can be considered a bob. Bangs also go well with bobs and can be just as versatile as the cut itself: Short and straight, longer with texture or side-swept.
Asymmetrical
An asymmetrical haircut is simply a cut that is not blunt, but rather longer on one side than another. Notable African-American women have worn the style as far back as the 1980s and versions of it continue to pop up in hair salons. Extreme versions of the style feature a long, shoulder-length side bang on a close-cropped (one to two inch) haircut, while more modest versions feature a slight, two to four inch difference between the left and right sides.
