Blow Fake Snow Having A Hair Dryer

Movies and theaters frequently use fake snow to create a winter scene; in fact, it's big business in the movie industry. Those on a more limited budget can create a wintry look by using a hair dryer to blow artificial snow made from potato and soap flakes, or other varieties made from plastic, cellulose and paper.

To create the look of blowing snow, fans and special snowblowers are typically used. But as early as 1938, a hair dryer was used to blow artificial snow made from bleached cereal around in a store window. This handy home appliance is often used for blowing dust out of corners or off hard-to-clean items, but can certainly come in handy for creating the look of winter weather, as well.

Instructions

1. Find an electrical outlet near the place where you want the fake snow to be blowing. Hair dryer cords are typically 36 inches long or less. If necessary, attach an extension cord to the hair dryer so you can move around freely with the dryer if it will be handheld; or, if it will be out of sight, the additional cord gives you more flexibility in hiding the dryer.

2. If you want to hide the hair dryer, prop it between two heavy items, such as large books or shoes, with the air nozzle facing up. This method is beneficial for a home party (for example, if you want the look of blowing snow by a door but do not want to stand there with the hair dryer in hand), or a winter scene staged in a window.

3. Turn on the hair dryer to make sure it will stay in place; the engine vibration may cause it to move when placed on a solid surface such as a floor. Reposition the dryer if it does shift. It may take several attempts to get the hair dryer into the correct position, and you may need more items to hold it properly in place.

4. Experiment with a small amount of dry, fake snow to make sure the hair dryer is throwing air to the area you wish to cover. You should also make sure to blow the fake snow at an angle that looks realistic, rather than from the ground up. Hair dryers have several air speed settings; you may need to try more than one before achieving the desired effect.

5. Position the fake snow so it will be blown around by the hair dryer, achieving the look you want. For example, it might fall slowly from a suspended bag in front of the dryer or be placed in a small pile in front of the dryer.
