Create A Bow With Two Bows

Making hair bows allows a lot of room for creativity. You can shape ribbon in a myriad ways by tailoring the ends and forming elaborate loops. If you handle the ribbon well, you can layer multiple bows together. This technique allows you to incorporate multiple colors, styles and textures into one hair bow. If you are putting two or more bows together, create different shapes and textures in each bow, so all of the techniques can stand out.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of thread 24 inches long. Run the thread through the needle until it is in the middle of the thread. Tie a knot at the end. Set the threaded needle aside.

2. Trim the ends of each ribbon into an inverted V-shape. Dab no-fray protectant on the edges.

3. Tie the 12-inch ribbon as you would tie shoelaces. There should be a basic bow with two loops and two end pieces.

4. Lay two 5-inch pieces of grosgrain, like a vertical "X," on your work surface.

5. Lay the other two 5-inch pieces on top of the ribbons in Step 4. These two pieces can form a shape that looks like a traditional "X." The middle of the four ribbons should look like an hourglass.

6. Sew the ribbons together. Start at the center of the ribbons and make a tight seam where all of the ribbons overlap.

7. Wrap the thread around the center of the ribbons. Pull the thread taut, which will cause the ribbons to cinch. Wrap the thread around the center two more times. This is the base of the bow.

8. Lay the bow you tied in Step 3 on top of the stitched ribbons. Wrap the thread around both bows three times to secure them. Tie the thread on the underside of the bow. Trim the excess thread.

9. Apply a bead of hot glue to the bottom of the bow in the center. Press one end of the 4-inch ribbon into the glue at the bottom of the bow. Wrap the ribbon around to the front of the bow. Place the other end of the ribbon on the back of the bow with a bead of glue.

10. Place a nickel-sized dollop of glue to the bottom of the bow. Place the bow on the top of the barrette.
