's first beauty pageant is an exciting milestone, one you certainly want to commemorate with appropriately stunning apparel. Pageant circuits throughout the United States offer infant divisions for babies under a year old. Each has its own guidelines and regulations for clothing. Glitz pageants, for example, expect children of all ages to wear embellished, glamorous clothing, along with accessories and enhancements such as hair extensions. Natural pageants, on the other hand, call for conservative, traditional formal dresses. Understanding the guidelines of your daughter's pageant is essential to scoring well in the competition.
Sunday Style Dress
A classic Sunday style dress is a conservative, low-glitz outfit seen in natural pageants. As the name suggests, a Sunday style dress resembles something your daughter would wear to church or an upscale brunch. The dress has tailored seams and falls at or below the knee with material ranging from from cotton to velvet. Limit embellishments on the Sunday style dress to a modest sash or single bow. Hold your daughter's hair back in small, decorative barrette but skip any extensions or fountains of curls.
Flower Girl Dress
The flower girl dress is a step up in formality from the Sunday style dress. The flower girl dress also hits at the mid-calf or ankle, but it is made from fancier material, such as silk, satin or taffeta. Embellishments on the flower girl style of dress are moderate, such as ribbon trim or a sequined flower at the waistline. Balance the embellishments in a natural or low-glitz pageant. For example, include a delicate trio of flowers across the empire waist only if the dress contains no other flowers or sparkling embellishments. A few decorative clips or hair bows are acceptable, but skip the hair extensions and rhinestone jewelry.
Baby Doll Dress
The baby doll style is a fancier version of a baby's summer jumper. Typically sleeveless or short sleeved, the baby doll dress falls at or slightly above the knees with an empire waist. Fabric and embellishments range from organza and sequins, for a glitz pageant, to traditional satin or cotton. Natural pageants will expect to see a baby doll dress without tons of ruffles or sequins, while a glitz pageant requires the exact opposite.
Cupcake dress
The cupcake dress is traditionally a glitz style dress featuring numerous ruffles, layers and embellishments for pageant contestants up to 6 years old. The sleeves on the cupcake dress are either ruffled or puffed cap-sleeves. The cupcake dress skirt is multilayered and made from a ruffle-accenting material like iridescent organza; the hem should hit at the mid-thigh. The front bodice of the cupcake dress is covered with numerous sequins and sparkles. Hair decorations for a high-glitz cupcake style dress are equally ornate and attach to a wig or hair extensions if permitted by the pageant rules.
