Many student uniforms pass the test for comfort and classic good looks.
Though student uniforms are mandatory at most private schools, some public schools have sought to implement them as a voluntary option, citing research that reports academic, behavioral and social benefits are derived from a uniform dress code. Few schools require that uniforms adhere to strict standards of formality, choosing instead to offer students classic styles that are comfortable and attractive.
Colors
While many schools allow clothing pieces that represent school colors, the traditional picks for most student uniforms are solid black, navy, charcoal gray or khaki tan pants, shorts, skirts and skorts; black, navy, maroon or hunter green blazers; and black, white, navy, light blue, red or maize shirts and sweaters. Plaid continues to be the top pattern of choice, and includes traditional red/black, green/navy and black/white color combinations as well as pastels such as light blue and peach.
Styles
For the typical school day, unisex pleated or flat front pants and shorts are often paired with Polo, Oxford and turtleneck shirts, as well as vest, v-neck and cardigan sweaters, all monogrammed with the school name, logo or initials. Some schools permit striped Rugby shirts and pants that reflect current fashion trends such as flared legs or those that sit on the hips, and extended-length and Bermuda-style shorts. Girls' skirts often feature kick or box pleats while skorts are acceptable in wrap, full pleated or tab styling. Drop-waist, pleated-front and princess-style jumpers are usually worn with white blouses, some with detachable ties. Standard or double-breasted blazers generally display the school crest, while monogrammed fleece, nylon and letterman jackets are popular outerwear options.
Accessories
Many private schools require dress uniforms (crested blazer with dress pants, skirt or short) be worn for special assemblies or chapel services. Dress uniforms include ties, which may be solid or striped depending on the school. Ties are often worn by both girls and boys, are usually monogrammed and may include the graduation year for high school seniors. Black braided belts are a classic uniform accessory as are black or white crew or athletic socks for boys and white, gray or black knee socks or opaque tights for girls. Shoes for girls are usually flat or low-heeled black leather while boys wear black lace-ups, loafers or Merrell's. Girls are often welcome to accessorize their hair with plaid or solid bows, bow bands, headbands and scrunchies.
Cost
The cost of student uniforms is influenced by clothing size and location of purchase, with most pieces ranging between $15.00 and $35.00 each. Exceptions to that are blazers, which may cost between $75.00 and $125.00, fleece jackets that average around $40.00 and letterman jackets which can cost several hundred. Most items can be purchased online or in person through stores that are exclusive to student uniforms, as well as at some middle- and high-end department stores. Some schools host end-of-season uniform sales where students can purchase discounted, gently used items from other students who may be graduating or have outgrown their clothes.
Debates
Some opponents of student uniforms argue that this type of dress code violates freedom of expression, minimizes diversity and places a financial hardship on some families. Many advocates for student uniforms believe they contribute to decreasing peer conflict and discipline problems while raising academic achievement and attendance.
