Make Ribbon Pansies

Use a needle and thread to securely fasten the petals together.

Ribbon pansies can be used to adorn a number of craft or clothing projects. They can be added to needlepoint to create a 3D element to the piece, sewn onto decorative pillows, made into headbands or sewn onto clothing items. The types of ribbon used can vary depending on your personal tastes and can include velvet, grosgrain, silk or any other style that has a wired edge. Be creative in your use of colors and the contrast between the center and the petals of the decorative pansies.

Instructions

1. Cut two pieces of ribbon, each 10 centimeter in length. Overlap the pieces of ribbon at a right angle and stitch from the long end of one ribbon, around the center where the ribbons are overlapped, and down the long edge of the other ribbon. Knot securely on the back of the ribbon. These will be the back petals of the pansy.

2. Cut another piece of ribbon 28 centimeters in length. Lay the ribbon flat and measure 10 centimeter from the edge. Fold this piece down. Measure 10 centimeter from the other end of the ribbon and fold this piece down. You will be left with a straight length of ribbon that is 8 centimeter long, with two 10-centimeter pieces pointed down. Stitch one of the long sides up towards the corner. Continue stitching around the corner, down the 8-centimeter length, around the other corner and down the 10-centimeter length. Tie and knot on the back of the ribbon. These will be your top petals.

3. Cut a 1 centimeter by 8 centimeter piece of silk contrasting ribbon. Lay the ribbon flat. Fold each corner down to create a triangle. Stitch across the bottom of the triangle. Tie and knot on the back of the ribbon. This will be the bud.

4. Place the back petals behind the front petals. Stitch the center until they feel secure, using thread that matches the color of the ribbon. Bunch the bud and sew it securely into the center of the flower. Use the black thread to make a few stitches around the center of the flower for contrast. Arrange the petals until the pansy looks realistic, using the wire edges to adjust.
