Create A Raggy Hair Clip

Raggy hair clips are adorable accessories for your little princess. Purchasing designer hair clips at boutiques can get expensive, especially if your daughter falls in love with the shaggy designs and must have one for every outfit. Fortunately, you can make your own raggy hair clips to suit any occasion or style, even if you're not an avid seamstress or crafter. Select thin fabrics that are more stiff than slinky, such as cotton. Once you get the hang of it, making raggy hair clips will become easier and easier.

Instructions

1. Measure, mark and cut eight 4-inch squares of your choice of fabric. Use shearing scissors to make the cuts so that your raggy hair clip will have a decorative edge. Spray the cut edges of the squares with non-fraying fabric spray.

2. Thread the embroidery needle with a double strand of thread to match the fabric. Knot the end of the thread.

3. Stack the eight fabric squares so that each alternate square is at a diagonal to the one beneath it. For example, place the first fabric square on a flat surface. Fit the second fabric square on top of the first one, but turn it so that the tips of the fabric are in the center of the sides of the first square. Place the third square on top of the second, but position it just like the first square.

4. Stitch the stack of fabric squares together in the center with the embroidery thread from the bottom up. Three or four up and down stitches will work to secure the squares together. End with the embroidery needle on top of the stack.

5. Gather the sides of the top square together and pinch it in the center to form a V shaped fold. Stitch each side of the fold that forms the V together with the embroidery needle and thread. Stitching the sides will make the fabric square stand upright. Knot the thread near the base of the V. Cut the thread. Knot the ends again in preparation for the next layer.

6. Repeat Step 5 with each of the fabric squares, one at a time. With each successive square, add fewer stitches along the sides. This will make each gathered square looser and seem larger than the previous one and will create the raggy layers for the hair clip design. The last fabric square will be almost flat, but the side stitching will add some dimension.

7. Cut a swatch of felt to fit over the top of the barrette from. The metal barrette forms available at most craft stores have an open slot in the middle. The felt will create a solid base for the raggy fabric. Glue the felt to the top of the barrette with hot glue.

8. Glue the center of the raggy fabric square on the bottom of the stack to the center of the felt-covered barrette form. Allow the glue to dry before wearing the raggy hair clip.
