Make Ribbon Bows For Dogs

Use your own ribbon to make dog hair bows.

Ribbon bows dress up the look of any stylish dog, adding an accent that expresses personality or coordinates with other accessories. While many groomers provide bows to dogs after a good cut or wash, it is also easy to make your own bows to use at home. This brings convenience and cost savings, especially if you want to change your dog's look frequently or are trying to save money by grooming her yourself.

Instructions

1. Select ribbon for your dog's hair bow, keeping in mind the season, your dog's other accessories and the size of your companion. Use fabric ribbons for a high-quality appearance.

2. Choose matching thread to go along with your ribbon choice. Pick thread that is not easily visible when placed on top of the ribbon.

3. Cut a length of ribbon long enough to tie a bow with. It is better to cut too much ribbon than too little, as excess length will be trimmed off. A 12-inch length of 1/2-inch ribbon is more than sufficient for most bows.

4. Tie the ribbon into a bow as if you were tying your shoe laces. Take your time to ensure that the bow lies flat and looks neat and presentable.

5. Thread your needle and perform a basic whip stitch two or three times in the center of the bow to hold it in place, tying off the thread when you finish.

6. Cut excess ends off of the ribbon, using your scissors at a slight angle. Paint the rough edges with clear nail polish to prevent fraying.

7. Hot glue a small rubber band to the back of the dog bow. Allow the glue to thoroughly dry and cool before using it to accessorize your dog.
