Create A Nerdy Costume

Design your own nerd costume from items you already own.

Your imagination is the limit when creating your own nerdy costume. Chances are that you already have many items necessary to pull together a humorous and classic nerd outfit, and the remainder you can pick up at a local thrift store. Whether you look back at your own high school pictures for inspiration or design your ensemble from a typical nerd stereotype, your costume is sure to be the hit of the party.

Instructions

Guys

1. Select poorly-fitting mismatched clothes to begin your nerd costume. Wear pants that are too short, called "floods," or pair together a striped button-down shirt with plaid pants. Button the shirt all the way to the top, and hike the pants up as high as they will go. Finish with a plaid sports jacket that is either over-sized or too small.

2. Part your hair in the middle and slick it down with heavy hair gel or comb it straight back.

3. Clip a pair of suspenders to your short pants and a bow-tie to your collared shirt. Wear a belt around the pants as well. Wrap a piece of electrical tape around the center of a pair of dark-rimmed eyeglasses.

4. A pocket protector is an excellent nerd accessory.

Place a pocket protector in your shirt pocket and fill it with leaky pens and mechanical pencils.

5. Wear a pair of mismatched argyle or striped socks with sensible shoes.

Girls

6. Match a white button-down shirt with a plaid skirt pulled far above the waistline. Keep half of the shirt tucked in, while the other half hangs out. Button the blouse all the way up. Add an over-sized cardigan sweater over the blouse.

7. Pull your hair into a side ponytail or into uneven pigtails that stick out. Tie the pigtails with mismatched scrunchies or ribbons. For shorter hair, slick your hair back with hair gel for a greasier look.

8. Break a pair of inexpensive glasses in half and tape them back together in the center with black tape. Attach fake braces to your teeth and apply pink blush and blue eye shadow in a haphazard way.

9. Wear mismatched knee-high socks or patterned tights that clash with the plaid skirt. Add flat, plain shoes or tennis shoes.
