Whether you need a length of ribbon to tie around a bouquet of flowers, to create a bow for a handmade greeting card or to attach a gift tag to a present, personalize the ribbon for a decorative or meaningful touch. Turn inexpensive ribbon from a dollar or craft store into an accent that coordinates with your project's colors, theme or occasion. Craft supplies like rubber stamps, buttons and pens help give plain ribbon a new whimsical, elegant or shabby chic look.
Instructions
1. Add a name or custom message to ribbon with alphabet stamps and solvent ink that won't bleed or smear. Make a clean impression by tapping the stamp on the ink pad, lightly pressing the inked stamp onto a piece of scrap paper to remove the excess ink and pressing the stamp onto the ribbon without rocking the stamp.
2. Decorate the ribbon by sewing dimensional accents like letter-shaped buttons onto it to add a personalized, eye-catching message. Thread a needle with thread that coordinates with the ribbon. Hold the letter button in the desired spot, pull the needle up through the ribbon and the button hole, and then push it down through a different button hole and back down through the ribbon. Repeat the process to add the remaining letter buttons across the length of ribbon, and then knot the thread in back. Use scissors to cut off the excess.
3. Personalize ribbon with a handwritten message when using it to wrap a gift or tie on a gift tag. Use a solvent ink pen designed to dry quickly on slick surfaces to write a love note for a Valentine's Day present or an inside joke on the ribbon for a best friend's birthday gift. You can also use the markers to make custom patterns such as colorful plaids, stripes or polka dots on plain, wide ribbon.
4. Embellish ribbon with "ribbon slides" that resemble small belt buckles. Use slides engraved with words like "love" or "cherish" as a meaningful touch when using ribbon as an accent on handmade greeting cards or scrapbook layouts. Attach the slides by cutting a piece of ribbon, pushing one end of the ribbon down through the loop on the left side of the slide and pulling it up through the loop on the right side of the slide. Affix the ribbon to the card or layout with double-sided tape.
