Pumpkin and ribbon barrettes are fitting seasonal accessories for back-to-school, autumn and, of course, Halloween. Decorating your own barrettes is relatively inexpensive and not too difficult even for beginning crafters, using plain metal barrettes and materials that are easy to find in craft-supply stores.
Felt Pumpkin Barrettes
To make a barrette decorated with a pumpkin on a ribbon vine, you'll a small piece of orange felt, a small piece of green felt, a spool of thin green ribbon, a plain metal hair barrette and a few small embellishments. Begin by cutting a length of green ribbon that is three times the length of the barrette. Glue one end of the ribbon on the inside upper lip of the barrette. When the glue is dry, glue the ribbon along the bottom exterior of the barrette. While the glue is drying, cut a 1-inch-diameter circle out of the orange felt to look like a pumpkin, and cut a small strip of green felt to look like a stem; hot-glue the stem to the top of the pumpkin.
You can use black fabric markers and beads to make a face on the pumpkin. Use circular dots or beads to make eyes, and use a fabric marker to draw a spooky grin on your pumpkin. You can sprinkle orange glitter over the pumpkin for extra sparkle. When your pumpkin is ready, hot-glue the felt pumpkin to the top of the barrette. Allow the glue to cool before using the barrette.
Halloween Barrettes
For an easy Halloween barrette, purchase a foot of Halloween-themed ribbon and a small plastic pumpkin. Look for a black ribbon with Halloween lettering, such as "Happy Halloween," or a style adorned with images of ghosts and pumpkins. Cut the ribbon into a length three times the length of a metal barrette. With a glue gun, glue the ribbon along the length of the barrette, starting under the lip of the barrette, then along the top outside, then along the bottom outside. Allow the glue to cool and then add the plastic pumpkin, attaching it with hot glue, to the top center of the barrette.
Orange Painted Barrettes
Create a pumpkin-patch design with green ribbon, orange spray paint, orange glitter, a small plastic pumpkin, a few magic markers and a barrette. Start by spray-painting a barrette orange. Be sure to paint with the barrette open so that it doesn't stick shut as the paint dries. Allow the first coat of paint to dry completely before applying a second coat. Sprinkle the barrette with orange glitter as the second coat is drying for a shimmery look.
When the paint is completely dry, glue the small plastic pumpkin to center of the hair clip and then draw small pumpkins on either side of the plastic pumpkin clip with orange, black and green permanent markers. Allow the ink to dry completely. Next, cut six 1-cm-long strips of green ribbon. Glue three strips of ribbon to each end of the barrette to resemble vines. Allow the glue to dry completely before affixing in hair.
