Make smaller looped bows for little girls.
Little girls and bows go together. But those cute ribbon bows are expensive. Making them at home doesn't require a lot of sewing skills. Loopy and korker bows have two kinds of ribbon. Flat grosgrain or satin ribbons form the loops. Korker ribbon is grosgrain ribbon that has been shaped into a cork screw. Combining the two forms of ribbon adds interest and excitement to the bow. Choose coordinating, seasonal or school colors to create a custom bow.
Instructions
Make the Korker
1. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees.
2. Cut the grosgrain ribbon straight across.
3. Seal the end of the ribbon using the lighter. Hold the end of the ribbon close, but not in the flame. Watch the end carefully. The tiny threads extending from the end of the ribbon melt and form a solid mass. This is called heat-sealing the ribbon.
4. Clip the cut end of the ribbon to one end of the dowel with the clothespin.
5. Twist the dowel. Wind the ribbon in a corkscrew the entire length of the dowel. When you reach the end of the dowel, cut the ribbon, seal the end and secure with a clothespin.
6. Place the dowel on a cookie sheet. If you choose to prepare several different colors, wind each color ribbon on a separate dowel and secure with clothespins. Place all the dowels on a cookie sheet.
7. Bake the ribbon-covered dowels for 30 minutes.
8. Remove the cookie sheet and dowels. Allow the ribbon to cool completely before removing from the dowels. This may take up to two hours since the wooden dowels hold the heat.
Make the Bow
9. Open the French clip barrette. Remove the metal piece in the middle.
10. Thread the needle with four strands of heavy thread. The tapestry needle is a large needle with a big enough eye to accommodate the extra thread. Tie a knot in the tail end of the thread.
11. Cut the end of the ribbon straight across and heat seal the end. Stitch through the ribbon about ¼ inch from the end.
12. Place the end of the ribbon against the back of the barrette. Line up the end of the ribbon with the end of the barrette. French barrettes have holes at either end. Push the needle through the hole at the end of the barrette near the hinge. Wrap the thread around the side of the metal and stitch through the ribbon and the hole in the barrette. Wrap the thread around the other side of the end of the barrette. Lift the ribbon and stitch through the ribbon, but not the barrette.
13. Slide the needle and thread from between the ribbon and barrette to one side. Lay the ribbon down flat on the back of the barrette and wrap the thread around the ribbon and barrette just inside the hinge of the barrette.
14. Fold the ribbon into a loop two inches tall. Hold the ribbon next to the barrette as close to the first tied section as possible. Pinch the ribbon to keep the fullness of the width on top of the barrette and wrap the thread around the ribbon to hold the loop in place.
15. Cut a 2-inch piece of korker and heat seal the edge. Stitch one end of the korker to the base of the loop. Hold the korker to the left side of the barrette.
16. Fold a second 2-inch loop and wrap the thread around the base to tie it in place.
17.Cut another 2-inch piece of korker, seal the ends and stitch the end to the looped ribbon. Hold this piece of korker to the right of the barrette.
18. Loop and tie the ribbon stitching continuously, alternating pieces of korker to each loop. Fill the back of the barrette.
19. Cut and heat seal the end of the looped ribbon at the end of the barrette. Stitch the end of the ribbon down to the hole at the end of the barrette.
20. Cut a piece of ribbon that fits on the inside of the barrette between the hinge and the clip. Seal the ends and hot glue the ribbon to the inside of the barrette to cover the tying threads.
21. Replace the center bar of the barrette.
