Slicked back hair and a sharp widow's peak will give a classic Dracula look.
A festive hairstyle can add the crowning touch to a Halloween costume. Hair can be dressed with additional decorative objects, slicked back or teased up and even colored temporarily with spray-on hair color. Your hairstyle can be the centerpiece of your Halloween costume, or you can choose to play down your hair to play up your makeup and clothing.
Bride of Frankenstein
The 1935 movie sequel to the original 1931 "Frankenstein" movie, "Bride of Frankenstein" created the iconic "finger in a light socket" hairstyle worn by actress Elsa Lanchester in the title role. Super crimped hair waving off the face in a sort of beehive hairdo is marked with a lightning bolt streak of white or grey running from temples to tip. If your hair is long, crimp it with a crimping iron. You can also get a crimped effect by braiding it in many tight braids when wet and allowing it to dry. Once dry, undo the braids and voila, crimped hair. Tease and spray the hair back off your face, either letting it flow free or clipping it up. Add a streak of silver spray-on color for the final touch.
Spray-On Hair Colors
Use spray-on hair color to give your hair an other-worldly look for a sci-fi or alien costume. You can also spike your hair with gel and spray it with color for an '80s punk costume. Use the spray-on color if you're going as a cartoon or comic book character or fanciful fairy or princess. When you use spray-on color, it's best to style your hair first and then apply the spray. Be sure to shake the can sufficiently and wear something you don't mind getting spray color on. Move the spray stream quickly over your hair to avoid glops of color. For deep, electric color, apply in layers, allowing each application to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
Slicked-Back Dracula
Hair gel used to slick back your short dark locks will immediately give you the look sported by Bela Lugosi in his iconic film performance as Dracula. Slicking your hair back will allow the pale makeup and startling drip of blood on the side of your mouth to take center stage. You can complete the Lugosi look by adding a widow's peak to the front of your hairline with eyebrow pencil. Eddie Munster was another iconic vampire who sported the slicked back, widow's peaked look. You could also use a wig or hairpiece to achieve this classic, severe Halloween hair style.
Honest-to-Goodness Beehive Hairdo
Though the beehive was a classic women's hairstyle of sophistication and glamour in the '60s, you can create a literal beehive on your head with the use of a few props. First, pull your hair back off your face in a tight bun. Next, using yarn the color of your hair, create a coiled hive-shaped mound atop your bun of hair. Finally, to make sure it's clear your hair is "beehive" style, add some craft store bees attached to the yarn hive with pipe cleaners that have been bent so the bees seem to be swirling around your head. Martha Stewart's "Halloween central" (marthastewart.com) gives step-by-step instructions for the perfect beehive look.
