Activities For Any Girl'S Birthday Celebration

Make her birthday special.

A house full of giggling girls is a sure sign that it's someone's birthday. Keeping the girls busy and making sure they all have a good time is your primary task. Choose activities that result in something they can take home with them for a fond reminder of the fun they had. Take-home activities also double as favors, taking care of another part of the planning for you.

Jewelry

Most girls like making jewelry they can wear for fun and fashion. Purchase a spool of bracelet-size memory wire and a large assortment of beads. Memory wire holds it coiled shape---if it is stretched out, it will pop back into a circle. Cut three to four coils worth of wire from the spool for each girl's bracelet. Hot glue a large bead to one end of the bracelet wire. Let the girls thread beads on in their own designs. When they reach the end of the wire, glue a second large bead to the end to secure all the beads.

Bottle cap diorama pendants are a great slumber party activity. Save all your metal bottle caps for a week or two until you have enough for each girl to have at least one. Encourage the girls to make a design inside the cap with decorative paper, beads, small charms and stickers. Let the glue dry, then fill the bottle caps with Diamond Glaze---available at craft stores. It will seal their diorama in a glasslike bubble. Let the glaze dry overnight. Glue a metal necklace loop to the back, string a cord through it, and the pendant is ready to wear.

Barrettes

Make festive party-inspired hair accessories with balloons. Give each girl a metal barrette clasp and a handful of colorful long and skinny balloons. Open the barrette and knot a balloon around it so the ends sit on the top of the barrette. Continue knotting balloons around it until the entire length is covered.

You can also use curling gift wrap ribbon on the barrettes. Set barrettes and curling ribbon in a variety of colors on the table. Show the girls curl the ribbon by drawing one blade of a pair of scissors down the length. Cut ribbon into lengths of at least 8 inches and let the girls curl as many ribbons as they like. Then use an 8-inch piece of uncurled ribbon to tie all the curled ribbons together in the middle; curl the ends of this last piece of ribbon. Attach to the barrette with hot glue.

Heart Sachets

This activity is well suited to a tea party or a party with a princess theme. Cut out 6-inch felt hearts with a pair of pinking shears. You will need two hearts per girl. Give each girl her hearts, a needle with a large eye, and a spool of thin ribbon. Girls stitch the borders of the two heart pieces together with the ribbon. Instruct them to make half-inch-long stitches so plenty of ribbon shows. Stop sewing when a 2-inch opening remains. Fill the hearts with dried lavender, rose petals or potpourri. Finish stitching the heart closed, then tie the ends of the ribbon into a large bow.
