Large loops of colorful ribbon attached to a barrette add a playful touch to any little girl's outfit, while also holding her hair out of her face. Spend a crafty day creating precious bubble hair bows, also known as loopy bows, from different colors, texture and widths of ribbon. Making the bows yourself allows you to customize them to suit any outfit or special occasion and save money over boutique-bought bows in the same style.
Instructions
1. Cut a 36-inch-long piece of each ribbon.
2. Take apart the French clip barrette by removing the arm and metal arch from the under of the barrette. Both pieces remove easily with a little wiggling.
3. Lay all the ribbons flat on your work surface, stacked one on top of the other -- order doesn't matter. Place the top of the barrette face down on the ribbon, with the hinged end of the barrette 2 inches from the end of the stack.
4. Wrap floral wire around the ribbon and barrette three times as tightly as possible just inside the hinge of the barrette.
5. Pick up the ribbon and barrette, and hold them with the ribbon on top. Fold the ribbon to create a 1 1/2-inch-tall loop. Wrap the wire three times around the ribbon and barrette where the ribbon comes back down to the barrette. Continue making loops of ribbon down the length of the barrette this way. Make the last wrap of wire just inside the latch of the barrette. Snip the wire and tuck its end under the last set of wraps.
6. Trim the ends of the ribbon 1 inch from the ends of the barrette. Heat seal them by holding them near the flame of a lighter for a second. Heat sealing the ends prevents them from fraying under normal wear and tear.
7. Reassemble the barrette by replacing the metal arch and the arm. Fan out the ribbon loops of the bow to finish it.
