Make Jeweled Hair Clips

Add instant glamour to an outfit by embellishing your look with jeweled hair clips that you've created by hand. Customize metal snap clips, bobby pins and plastic barrettes with self-adhesive gems, rhinestones or sparkling glass beads in vibrant colors or shimmering metallic shades. The inexpensive crafts are so easy to make, you'll be able to create a set of decorated hair accessories to coordinate with a host of outfits and wear to events ranging from formal gatherings to everyday activities.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Cover your work surface with old newspapers to protect the table from damage caused by sticky adhesives and spray sealants.

2. Gather an assortment of shallow bowls to hold the beads and plastic jewels you'll be using to adorn the hair clips to prevent the small accents from rolling off the table.

3. Place embellishments into the bowls, separated by type.

Embellish Bobby Pins

4. Thread beads with large holes such as plastic "pony beads" onto the "top" of the bobby pin, which is shorter than the "bottom" side.

5. Position the bead in the desired spot.

6. Use a toothpick to insert an adhesive dot inside the bead's hole---the adhesive dot will affix the bead to the pin and keep it from sliding back and forth.

Embellish Plastic Barrettes or Metal Snap Clips

7. Use adhesive dots to affix the sequins, rhinestones or plastic gems along the top of the metal or plastic, placing the sequins or gems directly next to one another so the original color of the hair accessory doesn't show through.

8. Embellish the clips and barrettes with microbeads instead. Use a paintbrush to coat the hair clip with a light layer of white glue.

9. Carefully pour the microbeads onto a paper plate and press the hair clip down firmly into the beads.

10. Let the glue dry for one hour, and then coat the hair clip with a layer of decoupage glaze to seal the beads and keep them from flaking off.
