Cover Buttons for Hair Accessories
As you shop for hair accessories, you may find that they are too plain or boring for your tastes. Consider using fabric to transform a plain ponytail holder, hair clip, or pin into one that makes a striking fashion statement. Fabric-covered buttons can be custom made to match your style or your outfit. You can also use fabric that matches the season to decorate the buttons. If you have scraps of fabric stashed away from other craft projects, use them to make dazzling hair accessories.
Instructions
Ponytail Holders
1. Place a shank button face down on top of the fabric so that the design you want to showcase is directly over the button. Use a fabric pen to trace the button but allow at least a quarter of an inch of extra space around the button. Cut out the shape from the fabric. This fabric piece will be your template.
2. Place the fabric inside of the white button mold that comes with your button kit. The right side of the fabric should be facing away from you. This rubber mold will shape the fabric into a button. Place the button on top of the white rubber mold.
3. Use the blue cap that comes with your button kit to press the button into the white mold. Use a lot of pressure. Pop out your fabric-covered button.
4. Take a piece of string and pull it through your ponytail holder. Use this piece of string to thread the ponytail holder through the shank loop on the back of the button.
5. Use the string to secure the ponytail holder to the button shank.
Hair Pins and Hair Clips
6. Repeat steps 1 through 3 in the first section to cover the button with fabric.
7. Use small pliers to remove the shank from the back of the button.
8. Place a bead of hot glue on the back of the button where the shank used to be.
9. Press your hair clip or hair pin into the hot glue.
10. Allow the glue to dry before using the hair accessory.
