Starting a hair bow business is a great way to make some extra money on the side while using your creative, craft skills. It's also an excellent start-up business for a stay-at-home or work-at-home mom. With the skills to make eye-catching designs, and a little bit of business savvy, your hair bow business could be a lucrative project you enjoy for years to come.
Instructions
1. Research the hair bow market, and find a niche. Are you planning to create hair bows for little girls, teenagers or brides-to-be? Will your designs be fancy or suitable for everyday wear? Consider how you're going to price your products to ensure your business is profitable. Think of a name for your business, and register it with your state. Work with a graphic designer to come up with a logo, business cards and brochures for your business.
2. Take a look at your competition. There are lots of hair bow businesses that operate through Etsy.com, eBay and personal domains. There may also be hairbow businesses in your areas. Take a look at how they promote their products, their pricing and what they offer their customers. If you think you'd like to operate part of your business online, try Etsy or eBay before investing in a website. You can set up a PayPal account to ensure you receive proper payment through your online store.
3. Create about 15 sample hair bows, and take pictures of your creations. Create a look-book for potential clients to browse. Include pictures of your hair bows and pictures of your customers wearing your creations. You may also use these photographs to create a small brochure, which lists your services, prices and contact information. A brochure is a great marketing piece for a hair bow business, as they are easy to mail, hand out at craft shows, distribute through the community and display at local businesses.
4. Begin to market your hair bows in your community by attending craft shows at schools, churches and community centers. Connect with the women in your area to let them know about your hair bow business. Contact local boutiques to see if they're interested in offering your products in their stores through a profit-share system.
5. Set up a hair bow party at your house, or find a couple of friends who are willing to host a party. Take your sample hair bows, brochures, business cards and portfolio with you. You could even show guests make a simple hair bow design on their own. Ask attendees to refer you to their friends.
