Make a hair bow in nearly any color imaginable.
Hair bows made from ribbon baked around a wooden dowel are the envy of every little girl and her mother. A cluster of spiraled ribbons held together on a clip is called a korker. You can easily make your own korker hair bows at home in any color to accessorize every outfit. While it may take a little experimenting to get the spiral size you desire, you can create beautiful hair bows using a roll of ribbon and a wooden dowel.
Instructions
1. Cut the wooden dowel to 18 inches with a hand saw. Cut 1 yard of the ribbon. Secure one end of the ribbon to the tip of the dowel using a wooden clothespin. Spiral the ribbon down the dowel. Hold the ribbon tautly in one hand and twist the dowel with the other hand. Secure the end of the ribbon against the wooden dowel with a second clothespin. Repeat with as many ribbons as desired.
2. Line an oven rack with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Set the dowel with ribbon in the oven to bake for 20 minutes. Allow the ribbon and dowel to cool. Unclip the ribbon ends and slide it off the dowel. Measure and clip the ribbon into 2 1/2-inch-long pieces.
3. Light a candle. Hold each ribbon end near the heat of the flame to melt the frays and seal the ends. Measure and mark the center of each ribbon with a pencil. Glue the center points of each ribbon together with a hot glue gun. Stack and glue four to 12 ribbons on each other. Cut a 1-inch section of ribbon. Wrap this small piece around the center points with the seam facing downward. Glue this ribbon in place. Glue the stack of korkers to a barrette.
